o No company will ever be fully prepared for any crisis that impacts their business. The key is to develop a standard contingency plan to keep the public informed through the media on how your organisation is handling the crisis. o There are Ten Questions a Reporter Will Want to Know in a Hard News Situation: - What happened? - Why did it happen? - Was anyone injured or affected from it? - Could this have been prevented? - Has this ever happened before? - Currently, what are you doing about it? - When will the problem be solved? - How will you prevent this from happening again? - Did you know this was going to happen? - What would you like to say to those affected? o For Crisis Management, Have a designated person in your company to answer questions from the press. In an extreme crisis situation, the CEO or the Chairman of the company should preferably be the main spoke person in order to project an honest and open attitude. o When dealing with reporters from the tabloids, please ensure you handle tricky questions carefully. Never release information despite saying it’s “off the record”, because it will be published. Avoid being drawn into a situation where you have to answer a YES or NO. Be prepared for open ended questions and prepare a list of FAQs or Frequently-asked Questions. • Try your best to avoid having negative press publicity. The negative impact will remain in the minds of the public for a long time. Always remember if bad press happen once, it is an incident. If it happens twice, it is a coincidence. If it happens 3 times, it has a pattern! Having it 4 times means it has become a lifestyle!
Understanding media and publicity for your business

• Many small and medium enterprises do not really understand how to work with the media to generate buzz and publicity. They often have a misconception that media publicity is exclusive to big companies having a huge budget to hire public relations specialists who provide strategic counsel. • Media relation is both an art and a science. Knowing your basics and adding some creativity and flair will produce an effective pitch. • Understanding what constitutes news and knowing what the media and press want will give your company a head start in gaining publicity. The press and media are powerful stake holders of your business. Having good publicity about your product and brand will always enhance public perception on their value.

The Untold Art of Pitching
Clean

Media pitching is the process of making live contact with members of the news media, typically editors and reporters. More powerful than simple electronic press release distribution, media pitching adds a critical element to your publicity efforts by getting the direct attention of the people who pick and chose from the thousands of press releases they receive on a weekly basis. Without adding media pitching to your media relations program, the chance of your press release standing out and drawing attention on its own is extremely slim. This episode is the interview of Andrew by Saiful, founder of http://www.asksaiful.com/ in his Entrepreneur Power Talk, a regular feature on his site.

This is an example of a well-craft media release to radio for a pre event announcement. It becomes a news section (taken directly from press release ) with editor's selection of interviews from people on the street. The result is the establishment of credibility and a feedback of public opinion at the same time. About the Event: One on One Express was Singapore's first ever National Blind date during Dec 2006.

A personal brand is a unique set of attributes or characteristics that differentiate you from others These characteristics can be ‘functional’ (like having a particular degree or proficiency in typing) or ‘perceived’ (like being a go-getter or thought leader) Remember, ‘unique’ means that there aren’t lots more like you! This is a 10-min interview on Radio 938Live on April 2009 on the topic of my Passion under the Passion People segment.
